There’s a unique kind of exhaustion that comes only at the end of August. It’s not the “I just taught five back-to-back classes” tired. It’s the “I’ve moved 30 desks, logged into four new platforms, and made 1,000 tiny decisions” tired.
My to-do list for this week has become a living document. For every item I cross off, two more seem to appear:
- Set up the gradebook.
- Find extension cords.
- Finalize seating chart.
- Re-learn the copy machine codes.
- Figure out why the new student information system won’t accept my password.
It’s the annual whirlwind of turning an empty, sterile box into a space for learning, and frankly, it can be deeply frustrating. The pressure to create a welcoming, organized, “Instagram-worthy” classroom can feel immense. The firehose of information from pre-service meetings about new initiatives and platforms leaves you feeling behind before you’ve even begun.
(Which is one of many reasons why I tend to go with minimalism. And decorate as the year progresses.)
This is the friction of starting something new. It’s the messy, unglamorous work that has to happen before any real teaching can begin.
And yet, in the middle of the piles and the panic, there are moments of pure joy. The satisfying click of a freshly organized binder. The moment the bulletin board paper finally goes up straight. The quiet hum of a classroom that’s waiting for its students.
This is why I wanted to start The Blended Bulletin. My name is Ms. R, and as a math teacher, I’m constantly trying to find order in the chaos. This blog is for us—the educators who are navigating the demanding work of modern teaching. It will be a place to share practical strategies for blending the reliable old ways with the promising new ones, all while trying to keep our sanity.
Because this to-do list isn’t just a list of chores. It’s the first step in building a community. It’s the promise we make to our students that we are ready for them.
We’re almost there. The calm is coming.
Before you head out for the weekend, I’d love to know: Amidst all the setup stress, what is one thing you’re genuinely excited about for this new school year? Let’s share some positivity in the comments below.
